A collection of answers to the most asked questions in the sony CMD-Z5 forum
A big thank you to Darren (member of the forum), who has done this collection of F&Q! - Last update: 29 jan 2001
How do I set-up my e-mail account on a Z5?

You need to set-up your e-mail account using the same details that you use on your PC. These include the 'dialup number', 'user name' & 'password'. Please note that user names and passwords are case sensitive, meaning you must enter them in the phone in the correct upper or lower case. When you first type in a word on your Z5, by default the first letter is usually a capital. When typing in your password, you will first be prompted to enter your PIN code. This is to protect your password details, as they are unmasked.
If you intend to dial up by a service provider other than that of the e-mail account, you will need to 'bounce' your mail off of the dialled-up provider. To do this, use the pop3 details of the e-mail provider, but use the smtp server of the provider that you are dialling up with.

WAP from my service provider is rubbish, or they don't offer it

You can quite easily use your normal Internet Service Provider, i.e. the one you use for your home computer. You may require the DNS server, or you may need to leave it blank. In some cases you'll need to choose ISDN for your connection type, and sometimes Analogue… see what works best for your provider.

My service provider says they don't support the Z5

If they provide WAP, then they provide the service that you need to connect your Z5 to WAP. Just get the information you need to enter into your phone and configure it yourself. The same information will be used for other phones, such as Nokia's.

How do I upgrade my software?

Contact your local Sony service centre, or the dealer where you purchased the phone. The software upgrade can only done by a qualified and authorised Sony technician. This usually involves the service centre keeping the phone for a couple of weeks, although the actual upgrade would only take minutes.

Where can I get the manual for my phone?

You may get a manual in your own language from your local Sony customer services. In some cases you should be able to get one free under warranty. You may also contact the moderator of this forum whom will tell you where you may download the manual in pdf format, if you provide your full name and address.

What use is a data cable?

A data cable that connects your Z5 to your PC's serial port will enable you to perform certain functions such as editing your phone book, sending SMS's from your PC, using your Z5 as a modem to connect to Internet etc. Currently, Z5 Manager from Bandit allows you to edit your phonebook details using most if not all data cables. He is working on further functionalities for the future. The data cable from pc-mobile (click on the top left button), is the only known data cable that allows you to connect your PC to Z5 and use it as a modem without the need for any additional software.

Where can I purchase accessories?

For original Sony accessories, the best place seems to be www.sonystyle-europe.com but accessories are in very high demand, and very short supply. Sony had not anticipated that the Z5 would be as popular as it is.

Where can I get new ring tones?

There is a large collection of ring tones at www.sony-z5.com. From there you'll also see a link to another site from Reiner Hummel, where you can download a program that will test the ring tones by copy/pasting the ring tone data into the program. It will also allow you to convert midi files into ring tones.

I can't hear people on my phone very well, what can I do?

One way is to take the phone to a Sony service centre, where they should be able to offer a modification or upgrade on the speaker. The problem seems to arise from the large space between the speaker inside the phone, and the surface of the phone where your ear makes contact. If you'd prefer to take matters into your own hands, then listed on the forum are ways to bridge the gap and thus carry the sound to your ear better. Remember that any modification that you, or any other unauthorised person does will invalidate your guarantee. Please use the search function to locate the topic(s) of performing modifications.

People say that they hear an echo of themselves when they call me

This problem seems to be related to the same cause as the above problem of the space between the speaker and the surface of the phone. As there is bad insulation around the speaker, the sound gets transferred back to the microphone quite readily. The solution therefore is to either take it to the Sony service centre, or perform the same modification as mentioned above… or turn the volume down.

Scratched?

Most of the Z5's produced to date are adorned with a scratch or two around the Sony logo, and/or on the inside of the flip.  It's not really a scratch as such, it's more of a 'feature' (aka defect) of the mould where the plastic case was formed.  It poses no problem, unless you have an acute paranoia about it.  But, at least you can rest in the knowledge that you didn't do it yourself!

Does the UV coating come off?

It is apparant that it does in some circumstances, and in doing so it enables the paint finish to be worn away revealing the grey plastic beneath.  Suggestion: get a protective case.
